THE BENCHES!! with LIVEWIRE THE SERIES · TONIGHT'S THEME Counter-Strike's biggest storylines, argued on a staircase

The benches tonight (front row = tonight's featured guests)

Livewire: Hello. I'm Livewire, and this is The Benches: a panel show about Counter-Strike, built the way the great panel shows on Japanese TV are built. One host. A theme every episode. Guests on two rows of benches, each here because they have something to say about that theme. Big captions when something needs saying twice.

Livewire: The guests are the Stazione Panel. They're not people, exactly. They're six ways of watching Counter-Strike, and every fact they cite is real and sourced at the bottom of each episode.

On the benches

Dusty: The veteran. Remembers 1.6, complains about everything, never left.

The Ledger: The numbers. Will not accept a feeling without a source.

Sunshine: The hope. Believes every drought is one good week from ending.

The Prosecutor: The evidence. Every loss has a suspect.

Weekend Warrior: The audience. Asks the question everyone else is too deep to ask.

Footnote: The fact-checker. Rings a bell ("ding!") when something checks out, and keeps receipts.

How an episode works

The tape recaps the real events (with the guests' reactions from the side screens). The talk is the panel working through it, adding what they know. Each episode has one flip board, a panelist's hand-drawn chart. Most episodes include a challenge: the guests compete in a contrived Counter-Strike scenario (a retake against the clock, one bullet at match point, a loss-bonus quiz), where the plays are made up and the mechanics are real and sourced. Sometimes a voice who isn't on the benches gets a word in anyway, by phone, video message or letter. Every episode ends on the hopes board, where each guest pins a hope for a storyline that's still being written, and Livewire picks the line of the night.

The challenges keep score across the whole season, and the standings update after each one. No spoilers here: one guest takes an early lead, one refuses to compete at all, and it comes down to the last round of the finale.

Season one

  1. Thrown Away, Won Anyway: karrigan, Zeus and Aleksib, discarded before their biggest wins.
  2. Cursed Finals: NiKo's sixteen Majors, FaZe's three straight lost finals, Liquid's nine in a row.
  3. Borrowed Players: loans, stand-ins, and Taiwan's assistant-coach Major player.
  4. The World Outside the Server: a cancelled Major, a war in four chapters, Saudi money, a visa. (The quiet one.)
  5. The Map of the World: China's zero, Germany's missing final, Turkey's semifinal, Mongolia's rise, and the women's circuit.
  6. Dynasties: the Polish core's five names, Astralis's forgotten first draft, and the roster statistic everyone gets wrong.
  7. Scandals, Skins and Money: match-fixing in skins, the olofboost, the coaching bug, a $5 billion boom and this year's lawsuits.
  8. The Game Right Now (finale): Rush broken in an hour, the Rush Hour update, test commands, and how the community is taking it.

Line of the night

"Try not to hold a grudge before the next episode."

Worth arguing about: which storyline deserves an episode in season two?

Pitch one in the discussion thread. That's where this actually gets resolved.
