Deathmatch is the mode most Counter-Strike players open without thinking about it: respawn forever, shoot whoever is in front of you, leave after ten minutes. Most people treat it as a warm-up. When our field correspondent asked one lobby what they thought of Deathmatch, the answers were "warm up" and, in full, "Hotdog Water."
But the scoreboard at the end is keeping score, and it isn't scoring what most people assume. Here's the match that showed us.
The best player finished second
Stazione's field correspondent spent part of a session spectating one player in an official Deathmatch server. In the correspondent's words, this player "tore it up, he was cooking, he'd hold space well." The scoreboard agreed: 48 kills, only 14 deaths (a 3.42 K/D) and the most damage in the server.
He finished second. The winner had fewer kills (43), more than twice the deaths (29) and less damage.
One server, one map, two players (official Deathmatch, Dust II, September 29, 2026)
The green player won every row except the one that counts.
Nothing was broken. The scoreboard just isn't ranking what it looks like it's ranking. Once you know the rules, the result makes sense, and you can use them yourself.
The short version
- Dying costs you nothing. Your Deathmatch score only goes up. K/D isn't part of it.
- Headshots don't pay extra. A kill is a kill, however it lands.
- The gun matters a little. Kills with SMGs, pistols and most shotguns are worth slightly more than rifle kills.
- The bonus weapon matters a lot. Kills with it are worth 50% more, and it changes every half minute or so.
How Deathmatch scoring works
Your score is the sum of your kills, and each kill is worth a set number of points depending on the gun, not on where you hit. Community guides document these values, and they match what we saw on screen:
| What happens | Points |
|---|---|
| A kill with a rifle (AK-47, M4 and friends) | about 11 |
| A kill with an SMG, a pistol or most shotguns | about 12 |
| A kill with an AWP or a machine gun | about 10 |
| A knife kill | about 20 |
| A kill with the current bonus weapon | +50% on top |
| An assist | 5 |
| Dying | 0. Nothing is taken away. |
| A headshot | no extra |
Two things surprise people. First, deaths don't count at all. We checked this against twenty full scoreboard rows: nobody's score was ever lower than their kills and assists alone would give them. That's why our correspondent, playing like an average player later that day, finished above someone with a 1.93 K/D while holding a 0.68 of their own. Second, headshots earn nothing extra. In another lobby, a player hitting 34% headshots beat one hitting 63% with exactly the same number of kills.
The bonus weapon is the whole game
Look at the top-left of your screen during Deathmatch and you'll see a banner, "BONUS WEAPON: UMP-45" or similar, with a small number beside it that counts down. That number is the seconds left on the bonus. We watched it tick from 16 to 1 across fifteen seconds of game clock. Then a new random weapon takes over, roughly every half minute.
A kill with the bonus weapon pays 50% more. The banner shows you the extra: +6 on an SMG or a Sawed-Off (half of 12), +5 on an AUG (half of 11, rounded down). Community guides say your drop key (G by default) swaps you to the bonus weapon while it's active. We haven't tested that ourselves yet.
That's how our match was decided. The winner's score was far above what their kills alone would earn, consistent with a steady stream of bonus-weapon kills. The kill leader's score works out exactly to plain rifle kills plus assists: if rifle kills are worth 11, as the guides say, then 48 × 11 + 7 assists × 5 = 563, his exact score. As far as the numbers show, he didn't get a single bonus kill. One player was playing the scoreboard. The other was just playing.
So what should you do?
It depends on why you're there:
- Warming up for a real match? Ignore the score. Use the gun you'll actually play, take every fight you'd take in a match, and don't worry about dying. It's free.
- Want to top the scoreboard? Take fights aggressively (deaths are free), switch to the bonus weapon whenever it's something you can actually use, and remember that SMG and pistol kills pay slightly more than rifle kills.
- Chasing headshots? Good for your aim, worth nothing on the scoreboard.
The panel weighs in
Weekend Warrior: Wait. Dying is free? I've been having fun in Deathmatch for years for no reason.
The Ledger: The kill leader's score is exactly 11 points a kill plus 5 an assist. No bonus kills. I've never been so moved by arithmetic.
Footnote: For the record, our first guess was that headshots decided the score. The next lobby said no: 34% beat 63% on equal kills. Corrected.
Dusty: In my day, Deathmatch was a mod somebody installed on a server and nobody kept score properly. Now there's a bonus weapon with a countdown. I preferred not knowing.
Sunshine: Deaths are free! That's the most optimistic rule in the whole game!
How we know this
- Observed firsthand in official CS2 Deathmatch servers on September 29, 2026: bonus-weapon banners (+6 for the UMP-45 and Sawed-Off, +5 for the AUG), the countdown, an on-screen "5 points for assisting," and twenty full scoreboard rows across several maps. Players are anonymized.
- CS2's server settings include a deathmatch bonus length, a time between bonuses, and "the percentage of extra points" for a bonus-weapon kill (command reference).
- Per-weapon kill values and the drop-key tip come from community guides. The banner arithmetic matches them, but we couldn't find an official table from Valve, so treat the exact numbers as "about."
The panelists are fictional archetypes. The correspondent, and everything they saw, is real.
